Tour Highlights

STARTING AND ENDING: Any Hotels in Kisumu

DEPARTURE TIME: Daily Departure at 0800 hours

RETURN TIME: Flexible

WEAR: Comfortable clothing, hiking boots, hat, jacket and sunscreen.

Gazetted as a national park in 1986, this 4.2-sq-km island has never seen tourism take off. It is forested and very beautiful, housing a variety of bird species, plus occasionally sighted hippos, impalas (introduced) and spotted crocodiles, a lesser-known cousin of the larger Nile crocodiles.

Ndere Island is home to a variety of birds, including Fish Eagles and a dense population of Swifts.

Hippos and Crocodiles, including the lesser-known Spotted Crocodiles, are a familiar sight. Impalas have been introduced to the woodland which fringes the shores. Attractions include hiking, walking, optional traditional fishing, and optional boat safaris at a cost. You will enjoy your picnic lunches before your transfer by boat to Kaloka, where you will be transferred further to Kisumu by your driver to end this excursion.

Tour Itinerary

Ndere Island is generally a hill. After a kilometre of hiking, you will get to the top of the hill. Looking around, the views are overwhelming. From the viewpoint, one can see distant Kisumu skyscrapers and part of Uganda.

Ndere Island has among the most beautiful views over Lake Victoria. The Island is accessible by road, around 40km from Kisumu town, and then you take a motorboat, which will ferry you for around 20 minutes.

Ndeere Island is a perfect spot for photography, camping, hiking and picnic events. There is also wildlife on the Island. The most common wildlife here is zebra, sitatunga, and monkeys. The entry fee for the park is very affordable.

Depart from Kisumu to Kaloka beach to connect your boat to Ndere Island. It is only 4.2sq km, an Island just off the northern shores of Lake Victoria, opened in November 1986. The name Ndere means ‘Meeting Place’ in the dialect of the local Luo tribe.

According to Luo folklore, Mikayi – the mother of the tribe, rested up near Ndere after her long journey South Down the Nile Valley. She found the lush shoreline so pleasing that she and her people stayed.
