Aberdare National Park Trout Fishing Day Trip is a full-day fly fishing experience in the rivers of Aberdare National Park—the moorland trout fly fishing expedition from Nairobi.
Tour Itinerary
0500 Hours: The Aberdare National Park trout fishing day trip starts from Nairobi at 5:00 am, heading to the Mutubio Gate on the south-eastern boundary of the park.
Drive through the green towns of Njabini and Ndunyu Njeru, where you will see many busy people going about their daily activities in these agricultural communities at the foot of the Aberdare mountain range.
Aberdare National Park covers just 766 km², which is relatively small compared to other national parks. It has more challenging terrain due to its location in Kenya’s central highlands, to the west of Mount Kenya. The volcanic range of the Aberdare Mountains varies from high moorlands at 3,000 meters (9,842 feet) to the peaks of Kinangop (3,906 m / 12,814 feet) and Ol Donyo Lesatima (3,999 m / 13,123 feet).
The Aberdare National Park one-day trout fishing tour from Nairobi starts early from the city. You will have an early breakfast en route at a stopover, then proceed to Aberdare National Park through Mutubio Gate. This is the highest gate and closest to the moorlands, where you can enjoy the best trout fishing experience. Only fly fishing is allowed in Kenyan parks, and you will use a fishing rod and artificial lures.
0800 Hours: Arrive at Mutubio Gate at approximately 12,000 ft and complete the entry procedures. Proceed to the moorlands, where most trout fishing in Aberdare National Park takes place, particularly in the icy cold rivers Guru, Karuru, and Chania. One of the best locations is along the Chania River, just below a magnificent high waterfall. You are advised to bring waterproof gear to withstand the cold waterfall spray at the base.
1000 Hours: Proceed to three other fishing rivers, each with unique features, including waterfalls, cave fishing spots, and views of the highest waterfall in the park—the Karuru Waterfall. You may also take time to admire the Lesatima and Kinangop peaks or walk through the moorlands to explore the scenic waterfalls.
1300 Hours: Enjoy a picnic lunch at the fishing site while taking in views of the moorlands and spotting wildlife.
1400 Hours: Continue exploring other fishing spots in the park, with varying success depending on the location. You may also encounter wildlife such as elephants, buffalo, duikers, and waterbucks.
1600 Hours: Exit the park with an en-route game drive.
1900 Hours: Arrive back in Nairobi after a rewarding fishing trip in Aberdare National Park.
