Bio Ken houses the largest collections of snakes in East Africa and is open to the public. It is a 30-year-old research centre dealing with reptiles, especially snakes and snake bites. It is located less than 5 minutes drive from the hotels in Watamu, heading northbound on the main Watamu beach read.
Bio Ken offers a free ‘remove a snake’ service fro the people in Watamu and the surrounding area. Any snakes removed from a property is relocated into the wild and released under the guidance of the Saving Snakes initiative, or is taken to the farm if they are of special interest.
Bio Ken also milks snakes for medical research and for tee preparation of anti-venom. It stocks and provides anti-venom to treat victims of snake bites with the help of the James Antivenom Trust (JAAT).
Tour Itinerary and Schedule
Bio-Ken Snake Farm will give you an insightful herpetology tour in this part of Watamu that is sure to amaze and thrill you! With 127 different species, the farm is known for having the largest collection of snakes in Kenya that includes 93 harmless non-venomous species, 10 species that inflict painful non-lethal bites and 24 deadly species, with 18 being known to have taken human life.
While at the farm, you not only get to see these animals up close, but you also watch as the staff milk the snakes for their venom which is used to make anti-venom for local communities and medical facilities, and guided trips to Jimbe and Gede takes you into the natural habitats of the snakes so that you learn how to locate and identify them in a much less controlled environment. As part of the farm’s outreach and educational programs to protect the snakes and promote the preservation of their habitats, Bio-Ken Snake Farm often takes the snakes on the road for demonstrations at local hotels.
