Kisumu Impala Wildlife Sanctuary was opened in October 1992 to protect a herd of impala and provide safe grazing grounds for hippo from the lake. It is used as a holding point and sanctuary for ‘problem’ animals, such as leopard, hyena and baboon. It is close to Kisumu town and occupies less than one square kilometre.

Set on the shore of Lake Victoria, the largest freshwater lake in Africa, the Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is a peaceful, relaxing place to enjoy the natural beauty that abounds here. The sanctuary hosts impalas, the rare Sitatunga antelope, as well as big cats, buffalo, giraffes, cheetahs and several primate species.

The sanctuary is also home to five campsites, all with spectacular views of Lake Victoria. Bird watching, nature walks and glass-bottomed boat rides complement the activities available at the sanctuary.

TOUR ITINERARY

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is a holding area for animals which require special protection in this densely populated area. Impala Park, Kisumu, focuses on a small herd of impala, while the animal orphanage contains a collection of caged lions, leopard, baboon, hyena, jackal, buffalo, cheetah, bushbuck, baboon and syke monkey.

The sanctuary also provides important open grazing for the local hippo population, while the threatened sitatunga antelope is believed to exist in the nearby swamps. A shady and peaceful place, with its abundance of birdlife

and picnic areas beside the lake, Kisumu Impala Sanctuary provides an ideal refuge away from the busy Kisumu town centre.

ITINERARY

0800hrs: Pick up from location/locations to be advised.
0830hrs: Arrive at the Impala park for the game drive/park formalities.
0900hrs – 1030hrs: After the game, drive and spend some time at the Safari Walk.
1100hrs: Safaris Driver /Tour guide staff will then drop you off at a location of your choice
