Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Ol Pejeta Conservancy Day Trip is a full-day excursion from Nairobi to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a 90,000-acre wildlife conservation ranch in the Mount Kenya region.

Day Trip Itinerary

0500 Hours: The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary & Ol Pejeta Conservancy day trip starts before dawn from Nairobi.

0730 Hours: You will enjoy breakfast en route at Karatina Town. Along the way, view the second-highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kenya, with its ice caps near the towns of Naro Moru and Nanyuki.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Ol Pejeta Conservancy day trip from Nairobi is one of the best options if you have a full day. The chimpanzee orphanage and conservancy offer a chance to interact with chimpanzees and also see the Big Five wildlife.

Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Ol Pejeta Conservancy are located approximately 200 km north of Nairobi, in the Nanyuki area. The chimpanzee orphanage is situated within Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which is a major success story in black and white rhino conservation. There are more than 110 critically endangered black rhinos, and it is the only place in the world where you can see the last two remaining northern white rhinos, named Najin and Fatu.

Ol Pejeta also has a rhino memorial located in the eastern part of the conservancy, commemorating all the rhinos that have been lost to poaching—an ongoing challenge to conservation efforts.

A one-day trip to Sweetwaters and Ol Pejeta Conservancy starts from Nairobi at 5:00 AM and passes through the Central Kikuyu Highlands, with Mount Kenya visible on the right near Naro Moru. A game drive in Ol Pejeta is very exciting, as you have the chance to see the Big Five animals against the backdrop of Mount Kenya. You may also meet Baraka, the famous blind black rhino, who now occupies the 100-acre enclosure that was once home to Morani, the last male northern white rhino.

0930 Hours: Arrive at Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary and Ol Pejeta Conservancy and begin your game drive. You may spot rhinos, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, leopards, cheetahs, and more.

1300 Hours: Enjoy a packed lunch at a picnic site or during your game drive within the conservancy.

1400 Hours: Continue with a game drive in search of more wildlife, including elusive animals such as leopards.

1500 Hours: Visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Orphanage on your way out before beginning the drive back to Nairobi.

1930 Hours: Arrive in Nairobi and be dropped off at your hotel.
