Tour Preview
This is the most popular of all the routes that lead up the mountain. It is the steepest and fastest way up Mt. Kenya and ascends from the western side. The route is not particularly scenic but offers some of the best tourist accommodations. Most climbers begin at the park gate, although it is possible to drive as far as Met Station (3,050 meters). Some of the challenges on this route include the vertical bog and the extremely steep trail with loose gravel during the ascent.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Nairobi – Naro Moru Park Gate – Met. Station
Depart Nairobi at 0800 hrs and drive to the Mount Kenya region (approximately a 3-hour drive) to Naro Moru, where you will meet the guide for a briefing and equipment sorting. Then proceed to Naro Moru Park Gate on the Naro Moru route, where the trek begins.
The guide will set a leisurely pace for a relaxed ascent. The trek helps with acclimatisation and allows you to enjoy the fascinating vegetation zones of an equatorial mountain, along with its rich wildlife and birdlife. A packed lunch is provided en route. The trek takes approximately 3 hours to reach Met. Station, where you will spend the night in mountain log cabins.
This is a good day for acclimatisation, as you will be sleeping at an altitude of 3,050m. A short hike will be taken in the afternoon to gain and lose altitude.
Day 2: Met. Station – Mackinder’s Camp (4,200m)
After breakfast, hike past the forest line into the moorland zone, covered with tussock grass and heather vegetation. Continue through Teleki Valley to the crest of a ridge, from where you will have a splendid view of the main peaks.
A packed lunch is provided en route. Continue trekking to Mackinder’s Camp for dinner and an overnight stay. The trekking time is approximately 6–7 hours.
Day 3: Mackinder’s Camp – Pt. Lenana (4,985 m) – Met. Station
A pre-dawn start at 0400 hrs is required to ensure a successful summit attempt and to reach the peak in time for sunrise. With the help of a guided ascent, climb to the third-highest peak, Pt. Lenana (4,985m), which takes approximately 4–5 hours. On a clear day, you may be able to see Uhuru Peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Take a few minutes for celebration and photos at the summit.
Then descend via Austrian Hut to Teleki Lodge for breakfast and rest. In the afternoon, continue hiking down for approximately 5 hours through the moorland to Met. Station, arriving in the late afternoon. A packed lunch is served en route. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 4: Met. Station – Naro Moru Park Gate – Nairobi
After breakfast, depart Met. Station camp and hike through the forest to Naro Moru Park Gate, where a vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to Nairobi or to your next destination. End of tour.
