This safari itinerary covers Amboseli National Park, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro; Aberdare National Park, with an overnight stay in a tree lodge and game viewing from the hotel terrace; and Lake Nakuru National Park, renowned as the home of white and black rhinos as well as flamingos.
Masai Mara Game Reserve, the jewel park of Kenya, offers sightings of black-maned lions, elephants, rhinos, cheetahs, leopards, buffaloes, and antelopes. Experience the rich culture of the Maasai people by visiting one of their villages (Manyatta).
Itinerary:
Day 1: Nairobi – Amboseli National Park
Pick up from your Nairobi hotel or airport in the early morning. Depart Nairobi for Amboseli National Park, a drive of less than 5 hours. Arrive with a short game drive, then proceed to your lodge for check-in and lunch. Later in the afternoon, enjoy additional game drives. Mount Kilimanjaro offers a scenic backdrop for photography. Elephants, lions, cheetahs, and buffalo can be seen in the swamp areas.
Dinner and overnight at Amboseli Serena Lodge or AA Lodge Amboseli.
Day 2: Full Day in Amboseli National Park
Early morning game drive, then return to the lodge for breakfast. Spend the full day in the park with a packed lunch in search of its popular residents, including predators and prey such as zebras, wildebeests, giraffes, and hippos, with views of Mount Kilimanjaro. Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight at Amboseli Serena Lodge or AA Lodge Amboseli.
Day 3: Amboseli National Park – Aberdare National Park (Forest Tree Lodge)
Depart Amboseli after breakfast. Travel to Aberdare National Park, stopping in Nairobi for lunch at an upscale restaurant. Continue overland through coffee and tea plantations to The Aberdare Country Club, located on the slopes of Mweiga Hill.
After high tea, proceed to The Ark Tree Lodge, situated in the forest on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountains at 7,000 feet. This lodge offers high-altitude game viewing, including rare species such as giant forest hogs, bush pigs, tree hyraxes, large spotted genets, and the elusive bongo.
Wildlife can be observed from various levels—outside, where you can see, hear, and smell everything, or inside, where you can stay warm with a cup of tea. Guests can request to be awakened if their favorite animals appear at night. A herd of elephants may be just feet away, and if lucky, a leopard or large male lion might make an appearance.
Overnight at The Ark Lodge, Treetops Hotel, or Serena Mountain Lodge. Meal plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner.
Day 4: Aberdare National Park (Forest Tree Lodge) – Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park is today’s destination. The park’s lake is famous for its hundreds of thousands of flamingos. After breakfast, drive through the Great Rift Valley, stopping at Nyahururu (elevation 7,700 feet) to see Thomson Falls, a 236-foot cascade on the Ewaso Nyiro River.
After lunch at the lodge, enjoy an afternoon game drive where you may see both white and black rhinos, Rothschild giraffes, and, almost guaranteed, the elusive leopard.
Dinner and overnight at Lake Nakuru Lodge or Flamingo Hill Camp.
Day 5: Lake Nakuru National Park – Masai Mara Game Reserve
After breakfast, depart overland to the Masai Mara Game Reserve, the jewel of Kenya’s game parks. This vast reserve, part of the Serengeti plains, is famous for the spectacular great wildebeest migration and is home to the Big Five: elephant, leopard, rhino, buffalo, and lion.
After lunch, embark on a late afternoon game drive. Dinner and overnight at Mara Sopa Lodge or Sentrim Mara Camp.
Day 6: Explore the Masai Mara Game Reserve
Morning and afternoon game drives are planned in the Masai Mara. Large mammals are varied, abundant, and easily seen, including Masai giraffes, buffaloes, impalas, zebras, topis, and both Thomson’s and Grant’s gazelles. Optional hot air balloon rides are available at an additional cost.
You also have the opportunity to visit an authentic Maasai village. Dinner and overnight at Mara Sopa Lodge or Sentrim Mara Camp.
